First Newsday

Today was our first Newsday as third year journalism students. This year is different as we are being assigned roles and groups, and need to work within them produce news stories, video and audio. Being part of the radio group interested me as it’s something I’ve not done much of before, Amy was our radio bulletin editor so she led us (Leah, Kurt and myself) as a team. As radio producer I assisted Amy in finding new stories from other groups in the class and started putting together a script for a radio bulletin show of ten minutes long. We decided to use five stories of our choice and make each two minutes long to fit the slot. We decided it would be good to feature the people who are actually reporting the stories on the radio as well, even if it was just a brief introduction to their idea.

The group I was working with was brilliant and I think we all communicated our ideas with each other really effectively, even when towards the end it started getting stressful with putting everything together. Amy worked as a really good editor and was organised, though we agreed more planning could have been done. She sent us all an email last week which I thought was really considerate and a good reminder of what we should be preparing.

The challenges we faced: We initially thought that we would end up having too much content to fit the 10 minute radio slot, but then halfway through the day we realised that we actually had too little content. This was a mistake that we tried to resolve through careful editing and then trying to get more material. In the end we produced a piece of about 6 minutes, again I think planning would have helped us to hit the 10 minute slot.
