“So you want to work in the glossies?” Talk with Fiona McGowan and Joe Barnes

Friday the 23rd was our first hand in for another module, and considering we didn’t have a set Newsday on the 22nd it was good to have the day to organise myself for upcoming assessments and seeing what I have left to do in the coming weeks.

On Monday the 26th I attended the talk in The Lighthouse: “So you want to work in the Glossies?” With Fiona McGowan, Feature writer for Manor Magazine (one of my favourite ever magazines) and Joe Barnes, who has worked for a number of different popular publications including Men’s Fitness.

I found the talk very inspiring, as someone who is interested in magazine writing, it was very encouraging to talk to two people who have had such success in their careers. It was brilliant that the speakers were both very open about their journeys and included loads of information about where they worked previously and how they found themselves where they are now.

I’ve realised from the talk I should really be attending more guest lectures and meetings that are organised by the course leaders, as they are very beneficial to not only the production of work but also the motivation and inspiration required to carry out good work!
